Oh how sweet...

Ms. Julie is very special to our family.  She's one of Brielle's teachers and babysitter.  Ms. Julie gave Brielle the sweetest gift at school today.  You can tell by the card and gift that Ms. Julie is special and so sweet to Brielle.  We are thankful.

Christmas Came Early

Henry Josey sent Brielle a Christmas/Thank You card!!!!!!!
Cutest card ever!
Brielle and Grant opened it together.
Grant tweeted about it.
I would say Christmas came early for Grant and Brielle!

Bass Pro Santa

We went to go see Santa.
Instead, we saw some elves, wrote letters to Santa, colored pictures, made a snowman jingle bell ornament, saw Rudolph, deer, wolves, bears, fish, and rode the elevator at least 4 times.
Hopefully, Santa will have time to see Brielle this week.

I was super thrilled with her letter!!!!!

Gymnastics

Brielle has been taking gymnastics.
Positives:
Brielle loves it!
She gets to see her friend Maely.
They really work hard and get a good workout.
Brielle got to climb a rock wall and try the high balance beam.

Negatives:
In Brielle's opinion, none!
Lindsey (Maely's mom) and I are not so pleased with the teacher.
But the girls love it so we are doing gymnastics through January.

Best Babysitter

I have to write a post about Ms. Julie.  She is one of Brielle's preschool teachers and now our babysitter.  Ms. Julie came over on Friday night and the last two Saturday nights.  It's been a busy Christmas season.  Grant and I actually had a good time going out.  Typically it's a horrible feeling and I question if I should even go.

So this post is for the great Ms. Julie.  Brielle loves her.  She loves when she comes over.  Brielle has requested Ms. Julie for all babysitting opportunities.  In fact, she came into our room crying after the first night Ms. Julie was here.  I finally got her to speak in the midst of her tears "Where's Ms. Julie?"  Awww....I guess we needed to explain she wouldn't be here when she woke up.

Brielle and Julie made pot holders, played games, watched a Christmas special, ate popcorn and pizza, sipped tea, and I'm sure much more!  Thank you Ms. Julie for being the best babysitter around!

Cookies

Brielle made flour...a mess...cookies the other day.
Enjoy!

Playdate

Brielle LOVED her very first day care.  She loved Ms. Jeanna, Coy Boy, and Drewbie.  They were the best of friends.  We love our play dates which includes Taylor (Drew's big sister) and baby Mac (not so much a baby anymore).  Thanks for coming over to play!

The original three - Coy, Brielle, Drew

The whole crew - including Taylor and Mac

Here is Brielle, Coy, and Drew 'back in the day'.

Birthday Party Weekend

Brielle was invited to two birthday parties this weekend.  Both of the kids were turning 5.  I guess we have 'officially' entered into the world of birthday parties.  You know the kind of parties that are not your best friend's child.  These are kids that Brielle knows well from school.  I guess Grant and I are forced to make new friends.  :)

Brielle had a blast at Oscar's party!
Grant was super impressed with the new McDonald's.

Brielle loved Maggie's party!
KidZone was the perfect place for running, bouncing, jumping, eating cupcakes, and opening presents.

First Christmas

We went to First Christmas Sunday afternoon.  This is the second year for Brielle and I to go, and it was Grant's first year.  First Christmas was amazing last year and it was even more unbelievable this year.  Thanks to my great friend Rochelle for inviting us each year.  I think it is now a Christmas tradition.  The music and musicians are amazing (including Rochelle's brother and sister-in-law).  This Christmas show is a wonderful way to spend time with family, friends, and remember 'the reason for the season'.

Heartbreaker?

I'm not sure if I should write this post.  However, I've decided to write about it anyway so Brielle will know about this time in her life.

Brielle appears to be a bit of a heartbreaker.  It started innocently a couple of months ago with talk of marrying different boys (River, Vinny, Andrew).  We just said 'ok' and went on with the day.  I was hoping this was just a little phase.  Interestingly enough Brielle doesn't talk about boyfriends or marrying too much with us.

Story #1
We were at Gus's house for a playdate on Sunday.  His mom told me that Gus was enamored with her Thanksgiving card.  He told his grandma to 'read it to him one more time' before she put it in his back pack at school.  Then his mom told me that they had friends over to their house. The friends had a little baby named Calvin.  Gus was thrilled with the baby all night long.  Later he told his mom that he and Brielle would be married one day and have a little baby named Calvin.  I was thinking 'oh cute'.

Story #2
Brielle told Grant that when her and Vinny grow up they will live together and drink coffee.  Again 'oh cute' then 'yikes'.

Story #3
Vinny's mom told me he was super upset on Thanksgiving.  He was sobbing and said he wasn't Brielle's boyfriend anymore because he messed up her turkey craft (old school decorated traced hand turkey).  Now I'm thinking 'oh crap'.

Well, I guess we have a heartbreaker.
We will end this little phase tomorrow.
However, it was pretty cute while it lasted.

Puppy Chow

Brielle asked Grant if they could make puppy chow after school the other day.  Well, if you know Grant you don't have to beg him to make sweets (especially puppy chow).  After school they went shopping for the ingredients and made some delicious chow!

Favorite Quote:
"Why isn't it called people chow?"

Great Grandpa Klug

On Thanksgiving morning Grant's Grandfather passed. The following text is from the memorial program and it is far more personal than the obituary.  It turns back the clock 10 years to before his dementia. They say these are the memories we will eventually keep of him.  These are the memories we hope Brielle will have of him.

John Robert (Bob) Klug passed away November 24 in Lebanon at age 93 after a short illness. He was born November 17, 1918 in Rochester, NY to John Baptist and Eleska Engert Klug, the third of six children. In 1920 the family moved to St. Louis, MO, where he attended Roosevelt High School and earned his Eagle Scout badge. For his Reptiles merit badge, his scout patrol collected snakes and took them by bicycle to Marlin Perkins who was the herpetology director at the St. Louis Zoo.

He attended Missouri School of Mines in Rolla, MO (now Missouri University of Science and Technology) where he lettered four years on the varsity football team averaging 45 min per game and was on the rifle team. He graduated in 1940 with a degree in Mining Engineering. Afterwards he worked for St. Joseph Lead Mine Company in Flat River, MO, where he met a beautiful young woman named Connie Winsor. They married June 14, 1942 just before he entered the Army as a private.

He earned the highest score in basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. He was recommended for Officer Candidate School and later trained at Fort McCain, MS, accompanied by his young bride.

He deployed to Europe with the 166th Combat Engineer Battalion, serving in Patton’s 3rd Army, and he landed at Utah Beach in August 1944. Fighting was fierce as his unit fought through France, Luxembourg, and Germany. They blew and built bridges, and served as infantry when needed. He was second in command as Major, and at 166th reunions through the years the men honored him as one of their most effective leaders.

The 166th liberated Blois, France and was honored in 1999 at a 55th reunion there, which John and his sons attended. He supervised the construction of a camp for 10,000 POWs in Germany. He received a letter from his mother near the end of the war about the village his family came from, and he recalled the small village specifically as having an effect on him. He later would reunite with his German family and visited several times.

He retired from active duty in 1946. He returned to the States to Connie and to his young son, John Robert, Jr., born while he was overseas. They moved to Tulsa where he worked for a division of Standard Oil. He continued in the Army Reserves and was Commander of the Lebanon Army Reserve Battalion.

In 1947, when John and his family moved to Lebanon, he acquired the first Lincoln-Mercury franchise in Lebanon and worked with his father-in-law at Winsor Motor Company. In 1948 he bought the Western Auto store, where he sold appliances in addition to auto parts. The introduction of home electricity through the Rural Electrification Administration resulted in a tremendous demand for electrical products, and Western Auto supplied wiring and appliances to homes throughout Laclede County during these early years of the new technology. Western Auto also extended credit to customers in the days before credit cards.

He served as County and City Surveyor and Engineer, Lebanon Public Works Superintendent, and president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce and the Merchants Association. He later decided to curtail his civic involvement to concentrate on his family and home.

John began planning a larger home as soon as his family came to Lebanon, and in 1956 the family, which now included four children, moved to Colonial Park on 80 acres. The home place provided a wonderful work and play experience for the children, with horses, cattle, sheep, and chickens. John and Connie instilled a deep sense of responsibility and a strong work ethic in their children through farm work as well as working at the store.

John endured a significant loss when his store burned in 1969 just days before son Harry’s wedding. He decided to rebuild and continued another 15 years in business.

John served on several scholarship boards for Missouri University of Science and Technology through his involvement with the alumni association, and he remained active with the Fort Leonard Wood retired officers group. His military battalion is honored in the Corps of Engineers Museum at the Fort.

Travel was a great pleasure for John and Connie. He had a keen mind and intense interest in geology and history. Their travels took them to Egypt, Mexico, Israel, Peru, and much of Europe. In 1967, through letters his father wrote to German relatives and sleuthing by son John, the American Klugs were reunited with the German Klugs. His father’s first cousin Georg is 96 and lives in Regensburg, Germany. John and Connie visited several times and remain close with many of John’s German relatives. All their children have visited and forged relationships with those in the home country.

With his background as an engineer, he had an interest in new technology. He bought the original Macintosh computer within weeks after its debut and continued to lead the family into computers, fax machines, and other new technology. His profound ability to organize and notate, seen in his detailed records of the store and home and tractors, was enhanced greatly with the advent of the personal computer.

John built Colonial Park to be a training ground and source of permanence for his children. He chose to pursue stability and a foundation for his family rather than his engineering career after the war. The entire family gathered for a wonderful reunion this summer and will always treasure that memory. John achieved so much in his life, and although his mind was dimmed in recent years, he remained strong, loving, and cheerful. The family owes a great debt to his caregivers, Dr. Sam Assafeen, and the staff of Lebanon Hospital.

He is survived by his wife of more than 69 years, Constance (Winsor) Klug, of the home; two sons, John Klug, Jr. and wife, Bernice, of Denver, Colo. and Harry Klug and wife, Joy, of Hudson, Ohio; three daughters, Theresa Knapp Holtzclaw, and husband, Fred, of Clinton, Tenn.; Carolyn Gengelbach Marshall and husband, John, of Columbia, and Margaret Scheperle and husband, Darrel, of Ozark; three sisters, Therese Klug and Florence King, both of St. Louis, and Laurel Ferraro, of Danville, Ill.; 15 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother, Patrick, and his sister, Catherine.

Border War

Thanksgiving with my family started Friday afternoon when my mom, dad, Jake, and Samantha arrived.  We ate dinner together, played games, hung mirrors, and sliced a lot of vegetables.  Samantha was again Brielle's favorite.  Aunt Samantha played babies for hours and changed what seemed like hundreds of diapers.  It was comical how quickly the babies needed their diapers changed.  Luckily Grant developed a diaper cleaning machine.  That saved lots of time and money.  :)  The guys went out that night, so Brielle wanted Aunt Samantha and ONLY Aunt Samantha to get her ready for bed and put her to bed.  As soon as the last book was read, Brielle started to realize that no Mommy or Daddy reading to her is very different.  Alas, I was called upstairs to finish the bedtime routine.  Pretty cute.  Samantha stayed up with me while I sliced vegetables for the fish fry.  I recalled why I detest cooking food that requires a lot of preparation.

We all went to the bitterly cold game while my mom stayed home with Brielle.  The first half was atrocious.  Luckily, the Tigers had a much better 2nd half.  We won!  Go Tigers!  We saw one of Grant's great buddies from college and his wife.  He hasn't seen Chris since his wedding.  It was fun chatting during the 2nd half.  I also saw 2 sorority sisters I haven't seen in a long time.  On the way out, we ran into Hilary (another sorority sister and more importantly bridesmaid) and Jeremy.  They were able to come to the house for the fish fry.

Jake and my dad once again out did themselves with their delicious fish.  We were blessed to have so many friends and family.  Brielle was extra thrilled that Hudson and Henry were able to come over.  The kids roasted many marshmallows, chased each other in the dark, drank Capri Suns (Hudson and Henry's first time),  chased each other in the dark a little more, tried the fish, and watched TV.  Brielle was even allowed to sleep in our bed that night.  Wow!  What a special night!

Hopefully, there will be another Border War next year.  Probably not with Kansas, but who?  When?  We love having our family and friends here over the holidays!

Thanksgiving Night

After the Thanksgiving morning with Jack, Sam, Kristina and Noah, we drove to Plattsburg to be with Grant's family.  Uncle Geno and Aunt Debbie brought Grandma and Grandpa Gengelbach to their house to celebrate.  We brought the ham.  We Grant cooked it.  It was delicious!  Laura and Scott were there too.  Laura and Brielle made necklaces and Scott dressed Brielle's frog up as a princess (hehe!).  I thought we didn't have any pictures of Thanksgiving, but I forgot that Brielle was a photographer that night.  Thanks for capturing our memories Little Miss!

Check out my necklace!

Thanksgiving

We started the Thanksgiving holiday on Wednesday night by meeting Grant's cousin Noah and his wife Kristina at the T-Rex restaurant.  Noah and Kristina have two adorable boys - Jack and Sam.  Last time we tried to go to the T-Rex restaurant, it was not pleasant.  There was a lot of clinging and screaming.  This time she loved it, because of Jack.  Jack loves dinosaurs.  He was in paradise!  We left around 9:00 which is already past B's bedtime.  However, she didn't fall asleep the whole ride home in hopes of playing with Jack.  Jack fell asleep even though Brielle was screaming "Jack" at the top of her lungs when Kristina brought him in from the car.

Thanksgiving Day was filled with:
Pancakes - of course Mickey Mouse shaped thanks to Grant
Macy's Parade - the Spider Man production was a favorite and we watched at least 5 times - then we were graced with two jumping spider men in the living room
Barbie Cake - Yes.  Brielle has been planning a Thanksgiving Day barbie cake for several weeks.  We made the strawberry cake with strawberry icing, pink sprinkles, pink flowers, and curly candles.  Jack and Brielle took turns breaking eggs, stirring, pouring, etc.
"Happy Thanksgiving Day" song - Yes.  We sang Happy Thanksgiving Day to You to Jack and Brielle.  They blew out the candles.  I think we have started a tradition.
Princess Dress-Up - Yes.  Even Jack was a princess.  We have the pictures to prove it.

Soup

Brielle made us soup one night.  Who wants a bowl?

Ellie's Birthday Party

Brielle was invited to another friend's birthday party.  I love watching her interact with friends she has made on her own at school.  Brielle was one of two friends from school at the party.  Ellie had a professional face painter at her party.  Wow!  All the kids had their faces painted, and she did an outstanding job.  The actual finished product was much different from the FSE school carnival the night before (which was poster paint and a few teachers).  Brielle chose to be a butterfly.  Brielle was very polite while Ellie opened presents.  Ellie's dad made the Strawberry Shortcake and My Little Pony cakes.  All the kids wanted both kinds of cake and both kinds of ice cream.  Brielle The little butterfly had a blast and was out quickly on the ride home.

Rapunzel

Brielle saw the movie Tangled last year (her first movie at the theater).  She plays Rapunzel at school.  She loves pretending to be Rapunzel.  We received a package in the mail.  Brielle was over joyed to see the packaging materials.  Can you guess why?
That's right.  She was able to "let down her hair".  Yes.  I did have to climb up in order to get to the upstairs.  Who needs real toys?  I'm rethinking my Christmas list now....

FSE School Carnival

I don't have any pictures of this fun-filled event, but Brielle really enjoyed my school carnival.  There were tons of games, treats, and kids.  She even saw her buddy, River, at the carnival.  Brielle won her first cake at the cake walk.  Grant said they did it like 5 times and finally won on her last attempt. She was super excited to come home with a decadent chocolate cake (just what all 3-year old girls need).  Double Bonus - Her favorite song "Firework" was playing.  It must have been fate!

Conversation of the Day

When I grow up, I want to be a mom and I will live with River (boy at school).
I thought you wanted to be a dancer?
No.  That's what I want to be next Halloween.

Brielle has already been married to Vinny and Andrew this year, so I don't think this is a lifelong commitment.  Thank goodness.

Josey #20

Henry Josey is a tailback for Mizzou.  He tore his patellar tendon and the medial collateral and anterior cruciate ligaments in his left knee on Saturday.  He is done for the season.

Why am I writing about this on our family's virtual scrapbook?

Well, Brielle is very concerned.  She was at the game and understood he was hurt.  She continued to ask Grant to explain to her what happened.  She asked Grant if he was his favorite player.  The questions did not stop.

Brielle woke up and asked how Josey was doing.  Then she asked Grant to tell her what happened again.  Later when we were watching the Chiefs game, she asked if Josey was feeling better and decided to make him a card.  Yes.  We have mailed Henry Josey a get well picture from Brielle.

Brielle loves #20!  Here's to a fast recovery!

Texas Game

We went to Columbia on Saturday for the Texas game.  It was much colder than I had expected.  I also didn't expect my brother to have four extra tickets to the game.  So it was a nice treat for Brielle and my mom to go to the game.  We had my brother's seats, so there was plenty of room for movement.  Aunt Samantha was also at the game, so Brielle was loving it!  Josey got hurt, but all in all it was a great game.

Brielle was so excited to play with Aunt Samantha.  Thanks for the extra large set of crayons, Hello Kitty coloring book, stickers, and a bracelet kit.  Brielle already started a bracelet for Uncle Jake and Aunt Samantha at breakfast.

Enjoying her "own" seat - Little Miss Independent.  Papa was making Brielle pay him in popcorn every time she wanted to pass by him in the stands.  She cleverly went under legs once to by pass the toll.  Then decided to crawl completely under the railing.  Oh my.

Tigers beat Texas!

Tailgating in the trunk was much smarter than standing out in the cold.  Brielle was coloring with her new crayons and new coloring book.

Brielle LOVES Oreo!  We stopped to visit Grandma Carolyn and G on our way home.  Brielle can't wait to hug Oreo and take her for a walk.

On the way out of town, we stopped at Panera to eat.  Here is another great example of Little Miss Independent.  Brielle was done, but we were not.  She proceeds to drink her chocolate milk out front alone.  ;)
